PROGRAMME EMPOWERS FUTURE LEADERS

September 2024.

Learners from Weston Secondary School, in the West Coast, recently took part in a transformative Residential Academy, a key element of the Columba Youth Leadership Programme. Now in its second year, this initiative is already making a positive impact by cultivating leadership and life skills among learners across all the participating schools in this area.

Funded by Umoya Energy, this three-year programme is designed to foster essential 21st-century skills, improve school completion rates, and promote discipline amongst learners.

“We are deeply committed to empowering the youth in our community, and the Columba Programme is an integral part of this mission. By supporting initiatives that equip learners with the tools they need to succeed, we are investing in the future of our region,” stated Amber Zeeman, Umoya Energy’s Community Liaison Officer.

The Residential Academy took place over several days and involved a cohort of enthusiastic learners and dedicated teachers from Weston Secondary School. Guided by the experienced Columba team, the academy provided an environment where learners could develop critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.

Two years into the programme, the participating schools, namely, Louwville High School, Weston Secondary School, and New Vredenburg High School, have already observed significant improvements. Students are not only taking ownership by identifying and implementing social projects like the “Green Means Go: No Littering Campaign,” but they are also gaining confidence in their abilities and becoming role models within their school communities.

“This programme is crucial because it teaches learners that self-awareness is the foundation of effective leadership. Before you can help others, you must first ensure your own ‘cup’ is full. Leading from behind and embracing mistakes as part of the learning process are key lessons we impart,” shared an educator from Weston High School.

Looking ahead, Umoya Energy is eager to continue supporting these schools as they work towards even greater achievements in the coming year. The ongoing collaboration between the schools, the Columba team, and Umoya Energy underscores a shared vision of empowering the next generation of leaders who will contribute to the social and economic development of the West Coast.
